The month flew by. Spring green has ripened to the greens of summer: the oak leaves thickening, the ornamental conifers push bushy tufts of soft, balsam scented needles. The red, pink, yellow and creamy white roses, tea scented or musky or spicy.
Greetings from my Northern California family. Here we are at cousin Michele's house in Livermore having a reunion.
Stephen Wu from Hainan has sent a new picture from one of the hundreds of gorgeous waterfalls on this ancient volcanic island south of mainland China.

12-Day Tour of Six Cities September 19 to 30, 2014
You may remember the posts from last December when I traveled to Foshan City to
interview penjing masters. Master CHEN's Penjing Plantation World's Largest Bonsai Market. It was at Master CHEN's plantation, sharing hot pot and toasting with plum wine, that the idea first emerged to conduct a tour inviting Western visitors to Chinese bonsai or penjing. And specifically, to LingNan style penjing as practiced in this Southern region of China.
We will visit China at the time of the annual Penjing Exhibition in September at the Int’l Exhibition Center in Dongguan, Guangdong. Tour includes six cities: Guangzhou, Dongguan, Foshan City, Zhangzhou, Xiamen and Quangzhou. Penjing gardens at every city, meet Chinese bonsai masters and tour world’s largest bonsai market.
We will sample and experience cultural traditions of Taoist medicinal massage, Anmo, tea and cuisine, martial arts Kung Fu as well as contemporary music and dance performances.
Alan Feng and I have been crunching the numbers for a 12-day trip, balancing tour values with economy. We are trying to balance 60% Chinese bonsai with 40% other cultural sites and experiences. The Itinerary has a comprehensive list of things to do in the six cities. Send me a request for more info and I will forward you the Itinerary and Fact Sheet.
Since I closed and sold the Window Box Bonsai Accents & Art Gallery in 2011, I have enjoyed my remaining trees at home. This year, the Dunsmuir Garden Club had their annual flower show at the SAM (Siskiyou Art Museum) during Dogwood Daze. My satsuki azalea "Goko" was starting to show bloom that day. Now, more than a week later, you can see the full flowering.
